Mike Ryan
Linebacker Coach
Mike Ryan joins Linebacker Prototype Academy as head coach in Connecticut with 15 years of collegiate coaching experience. Most recently Ryan served on staff at his alma mater the University of Connecticut where he helped turn around a program and lead them to their first bowl appearance since 2015. He helped mentor the linebacker position which included standouts Jackson Mitchell, Ian Swenson, and Brandon Bouyer-Randle.
Ryan has had a distinguished coaching career, contributing significantly to Maine's "Black Hole" defense. As defensive coordinator, he guided strong performances, including mentoring All-CAA players like Deshawn Stevens, who led the team in tackles in 2021 and was later drafted No. 6 overall in the CFL. In 2019, despite key injuries, his defense ranked among the best in the CAA in pass efficiency and allowed the fewest passing touchdowns, with standout performances from players like Kayon Whitaker.
In 2018, Ryan played a crucial role in Maine's top-ranked rush defense during their FCS final four run. His mentorship led to impressive individual performances, including Stevens’ 120 tackles and 9 sacks. Previously, he served as recruiting coordinator (2016-2018), building strong classes and developing top players like Christophe Mulumba Tshimanga and Sterling Sheffield.
Before Maine, Ryan worked at Trinity College and Bates College, helping lead Trinity to an undefeated 2012 NESCAC Championship. A UConn graduate, he served as defensive student assistant during three bowl appearances, including the 2011 Fiesta Bowl.
